Providing Addiction Recovery and Marriage Counseling Northfield
The Juniper Center, which provides counseling and therapy services in Northfield, IL, is pleased to welcome Mariann Smith, LCPC, LMFT, CADC to the practice. Smith began her career in the field of substance abuse (CADC is a Certified Drug and Alcohol Abuse Counselor) and became a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT). She specializes in working with individuals, families and couples with a multitude of issues including substance abuse, dual diagnosis, premarital issues, newlywed adjustments and child-rearing problems.
Helping individuals and Families Impacted by Addition Recovery and Substance Abuse
Smith works with individuals on all phrases of the recovery process, from early treatment to long-term sobriety. She utilizes techniques from cognitive behavioral therapies, 12 Step model, motivational interviewing and marital therapies. She also works with individuals who are transitioning from an in-patient hospital program as they re-integrate into their day to day lives.
When working with adolescents with addictions, Smith says “I strive to involve the whole family in counseling in order to maximize the potential for improvement. I integrate a family systems approach, addressing the needs of the entire family when a family member is in the substance abuse recovery process.”
A sudden drop in grades, problems with peer relationships, moodiness, a decreased ability to concentrate…these may all be signs of a deeper issue. While it could be typical for this stage of adolescence, it could also be a sign of an underlying problem such as drug and alcohol abuse, depression, anxiety or chronic worrying. “All of these can get in the way of your child’s success and happiness,” says Smith.
Marriage and Family Therapy, Relationship Counseling
As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Smith specializes in helping families facing conflict to improve communication and rebuild their relationships. “I have developed a strong compassion for understanding the human struggle and quest for knowledge. I believe every person and family has a story, an experience, and a distinct way of viewing and coping with life.”
“I work with couples of all ages,” says Smith, whether they are seeking proactive pre-marital counseling to explore expectations and set the stage for their new life together, or couples that are thinking of divorce. “Sometimes there is a breakdown in basic communication skills, or one of the couple needs individual work on an issue that is impacting the dynamics of the relationship.” Smith assesses and addresses needs from a family/systems dynamic for positive outcomes.
“Life transitions are also a time when someone might seek therapy,” says Smith. “Women becoming empty nesters or following a divorce, women may struggle adjusting to a new identity from mother or wife to independent woman. It’s exciting but scary at the same time. Counseling can help.”
