Happy Pride Month! - Counseling & Therapy Services - The Juniper Center

Pride Month occurs every June and is a celebration of those who are a part of the LGBTQ+ community and the allies who support the community daily. The Juniper Center talks about the importance of this month and how much of an impact it can leave not just on the community itself, but for those who are supporters in various ways.

We Celebrate Pride Together

What Pride Month means: A look at the history of the LGBTQ celebration

During Pride Month, it’s important to remember that it’s not just focused on the members of the LGBTQ+ community, but it’s also focused on the allies, parents, and friends who give nothing but support to those individuals. Developing a strong support system does show that we are not alone as we come together as one to celebrate the special things that make the community what it is and create a safe space where they can share the love. Juniper Center clinician Erica Hungerford mentions the studies that “consistently show that a sense of community and belonging reduces depression, anxiety, and suicide risk. Support from people outside the LGBTQ community is very impactful and helps remind us that we belong, that we’re accepted, and that we’re worthy of support.”

Remember the Victories and Challenges

Like most people, the members of the community have seen many victories as a sign of moving forward toward more acceptance; however, there have also been many challenges that have been part of the community’s history. Juniper Center clinician Linda Williams comments on how many folks in the community “continue to face discrimination in their personal lives, in the workplace, and the public sphere, and in their access to critical health care.” Some of these challenges have been so hard for these individuals that it has forced them to go into hiding and made them more afraid to show who they are to the whole world. However, as education continues many in the community continue to make courageous decisions to show the world their true colors in new ways. Often what may seem like small victories can serve as a larger inspiration to others during Pride Month and beyond.

Education and Communication Are Important

Some people tend to make assumptions about the community that are most likely not true, which is why it’s important to communicate with one another and ask questions. “The more awareness and education we can provide around LGBTQ+ communities, the less fear there will be,” Erica Hungerford comments on learning more about these individuals. “Fear contributes to how people treat different groups as ‘others’ and education can help alleviate that fear.” One needs to do research and ask experts about the importance of learning about these individuals to see how you can help them be more open with others and help them live less in fear and live more in the moment.

Don’t Be Afraid to Reach Out

During Pride Month, we all come together as members and allies of the LGBTQ+ community to spread the message of equality and love; however, there may be those moments where we feel like we are alone. There are many towns and cities across the nation that host pride events, such as festivals, parades, and presentations that celebrate those who are proud to be who they are and spread the message of love. However, if you do live somewhere that isn’t fully accepting of those individuals, there are plenty of resources online, such as Facebook groups and online forums, that people can become a part of to make their voices heard.

Pride Month has become a grand celebration of the LGBTQ+ community, and we are all here to support one another. The Juniper Center is a great resource for those who may need help navigating their daily struggles as members or allies of the community.
