About the Presentation: Understanding Adolescent Addiction

Adolescent Substance use is an ever increasing problem, impacting families on many levels. This training examines the common pressures of teen years and how substance use impacts development. This presentation will look at common drugs of use amongst adolescent. We will explore at risk factors for use, taking into consideration the recent changes of our current landscape with internet and how we are seeing Covid-19 impact adolescents and their substance use.

 

Participants will learn about the components of teen substance use, including patterns of behavior that are indicative of problematic use. The progression of addiction, and the relationship between mental health and substance use in an adolescent brain will be discussed. We will also discuss the traits of family members that impact adolescent substance use. The course will guide clinicians to better support their client or client’s families on how to identify markers of problematic use and also discuss the resources available to families and the role of the clinician in making a referral.

  2. Understanding of the progression of Substance use disorder,
  3. Understanding of the components of teen substance use disorder.


About the Presenter: Maria Campobasso, Rosecrance

Maria Campobasso is an Engagement and Access Counselor at Rosecrance Health Network, where Maria provides support for clients, their families, and referents by hand holding the assessment and admission process from start to finish. Maria leans on 15 plus years of experience and has worked in treating both adolescents and adults who struggle with mental health and substance use disorders in many capacities.


Prior to joining the Rosecrance team, Maria worked at Hazelden Betty Ford in a number of capacities including intake, group facilitation, and managed care, giving her the experience and understanding of all facets of treatment. Maria holds a Bachelor’s degree from Knox College, and a Master’s Degree from National Louis University and is a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor with an Adolescent Treatment Endorsement. She has provided trainings on Domestic Violence and its relationship with substance use disorder for A Safe Place.
