As the back-to-school season approaches, many children, teens, and families find themselves adjusting to new routines, expectations, and life changes. While The Juniper Center offers a variety of therapy services for children and young adults through our Juniper Junior program, one service that can benefit individuals of all ages is art therapy. Art therapy is a specialized mental health profession that combines creative expression with the therapeutic process to help individuals explore emotions, manage stress, and navigate life’s challenges. Guided by a credentialed art therapist, clients may use painting, drawing, sculpting, and other artistic mediums to express thoughts and feelings that can be difficult to put into words. To learn more about the impact of art therapy across the lifespan, we spoke with several of our art therapists about how creative expression can support emotional well-being and help people of all ages work through challenges, build resilience, and discover new ways to communicate and heal.
Art Connects the Mind and Body

Many of us experience thoughts, emotions, and life experiences that can be difficult to put into words. Art therapy offers an alternative way to express and process those feelings, allowing individuals to communicate through creativity when verbal expression feels challenging. Through the act of creating, clients can explore their inner experiences, gain insight into their emotions, and share parts of themselves that may otherwise remain unspoken. Juniper Center art therapist Shelby Graves views art therapy as a powerful tool for connection. She explains, “I think of art therapy as using art as a tool for connection. This can look like a tool to connect the mind and body, a tool to allow trust to build between the therapist and client, or using art to make the inner world visible.” Shelby emphasizes that art therapy is much more than creating artwork during a session—it can serve as a transformative therapeutic approach that complements or, in some cases, provides an alternative to traditional talk therapy. As she notes, “Anybody could benefit from this approach!”
Art Therapy Allows Exploration of Certain Feelings

Everyone experiences moments of frustration, anger, sadness, or overwhelm. When these emotions build up without a healthy outlet, it can become difficult to process them effectively. Art therapy provides a safe and constructive space for individuals to explore and express these feelings through creativity, helping them better understand their emotions rather than keeping them bottled up inside. Juniper Center art therapist Marilyn Markech explains, “Making art can be a safe way for anyone to explore feelings and experiences that are otherwise difficult or overwhelming. Art therapy provides a creative outlet for exploring anger, fear, or sadness so that these feelings don’t get bottled up and become explosive. Having the chance to be creative and fully in charge of the art-making process also lets anyone feel powerful and more in control.” Whether someone is navigating challenges at school, work, home, or in their relationships, art therapy can offer a meaningful way to process difficult experiences. For individuals who struggle to put their thoughts and feelings into words, creative expression can become a powerful pathway to greater self-awareness, emotional regulation, and connection with themselves.
Art Therapy Gives Us the Chance to Relax

In the midst of busy schedules, responsibilities, and daily stressors, art therapy can provide a valuable opportunity to slow down, reflect, and focus on the thoughts and feelings that may otherwise be pushed aside. Working one-on-one with a licensed art therapist creates a supportive, judgment-free environment where individuals can explore their inner experiences through creativity and gain a deeper understanding of themselves. Juniper Center art therapist Mikayla Chen shares, “Art therapy reminds many people that art is a way to have fun. It can reignite a love for creation, not for a specific outcome or goal, but rather for the simple joy of creating. It reminds us how to enjoy ourselves, to slow down and enjoy the process. In this way, art can be very freeing.” Much like journaling, art therapy offers a healthy outlet for expressing thoughts and emotions that may feel difficult to articulate. Through the creative process, individuals can gain new perspectives, release stress, and discover the value of self-expression without the pressure of achieving a particular result.
Don’t Be Afraid to Explore Art Therapy

For some individuals, the idea of art therapy may feel intimidating at first—especially if they do not consider themselves to be “artistic.” However, with the guidance of a licensed art therapist, clients are encouraged to explore creativity in a way that feels comfortable, meaningful, and uniquely their own. Art therapy is not about creating a perfect piece of artwork or receiving a grade or critique; it is about self-expression, mindfulness, and discovering new ways to understand yourself. As Marilyn, Shelby, and Mikayla collectively share, “It is about engaging with your creativity, and with the part of you that experiences wonder and joy. We strive to remember to feed our bodies, but it is important to feed our minds too! Art therapy can help you tap into and nourish your creativity. The artwork you make in therapy won’t be graded or critiqued. Art therapy is a chance to be messy, playful, and creative in a judgment-free zone.”
