Many people may not know that The Juniper Center has a nonprofit arm called the Bridging the Gap Collective. This organization provides pro-bono mental health services to individuals without insurance or access to care in their communities. By collaborating with nonprofits and local leaders, the Collective works to create lasting change and foster hope where it’s needed most. It also empowers the next generation of clinicians through mentorship, hands-on experience, and training in cultural competence—preparing them to make a meaningful impact in the lives they serve. This month, we’re spotlighting our interns—past and present— by inviting them to share their experiences at The Juniper Center and their hopes for the future of the Bridging the Gap Collective.
Gaining New Therapy Experience

Like any internship, the goal of our program is to provide real-world clinical experience to students completing their degrees. Each intern is thoughtfully matched with clients whose needs align with their developing therapy style, while also being encouraged to explore new therapeutic frameworks. Former intern Amanda Valenti shared that she “found that [she] wasn’t just learning new frameworks, such as IFS therapy; [she] was also uncovering a more profound sense of identity.” That insight captures what makes the Bridging the Gap Collective so special—not only does it help clients discover who they are, but it also allows interns to define the kind of therapists they aspire to become. Seeing both clients and interns grow in self-awareness and purpose reminds us why this work matters and reaffirms the heart of our mission: to create opportunities for transformation in every direction.
Creating A Space for Growth

When someone joins a mental health private practice, their goal is often the same—to find a supportive space and the right people to help them grow, both personally and professionally. At The Juniper Center, our interns become part of that community. Intern Seham Abdelnaeim shared, “In just a short time, I have already experienced The Juniper Center’s culturally informed, compassionate, and generous approach to mentorship. What stands out most is their openness to treating this internship as a space of mutual learning—not only guiding me, but also creating room for shared growth and reflection. This spirit of collaboration allows interns to engage in meaningful projects that connect social justice, community well-being, and clinical practice. Together, we continue to expand the reach of mental health awareness and strengthen our shared commitment to healing and growth.
Easy Access to Learning Resources

Beyond gaining hands-on experience, our interns also have access to a wealth of professional development resources that strengthen their clinical skills. One key resource is The Juniper Center’s Continuing Education School, which offers courses led by our own clinicians and other mental health professionals on a wide range of relevant topics. Former intern Cy Watson, who has since joined the field full-time, shared that “having access to quality training that I could apply directly with clients was incredibly valuable. It shows how much the practice values counselor education.” In addition to these courses, interns benefit from being surrounded by a diverse community of mental health professionals who share knowledge, insight, and encouragement. This supportive environment not only enhances clinical growth but also fosters a lifelong commitment to learning and collaboration.
Being There for Their Clients

Many clients come to The Juniper Center for the pro-bono mental health services offered through the Bridging the Gap Collective, and their feedback is consistently uplifting. They express deep gratitude for the safe, supportive space our interns and clinicians create. Intern-turned-clinician Danny Ivanov reflected, “The most rewarding aspect of this role was witnessing the transformative effects of finally providing an affordable and consistent therapeutic space for people who have long fought to gain the support they deserve.” For many interns, seeing their clients grow through this access to care is profoundly meaningful. These experiences not only reaffirm their commitment to the field but also inspire them to continue their professional growth as they transition into fully licensed clinicians making a difference in their own communities.
We’re incredibly proud of the impact this program has made and remain dedicated to finding new ways to expand and serve more clients in need of care. Each quarter, a new group of interns joins The Juniper Center, eager to strengthen their clinical skills while helping clients discover renewed confidence and healing.
